Sometimes Life Throws You a Curveball... When Martine –my wife- woke up from an operation to remove a blood clot from her spinal cord, she was paralyzed from the waist down. The medical community, whose diagnosis and surgical intervention took place in the space of one week, gave her less than a 5 percent chance of ever walking again. We faced some serious questions about how we would cope, but more importantly, could we prove the medical community wrong about the odds, because if we could not, life would not be worth living for Martine. Under tremendous pressure from all sides, we embarked on a journey to search for answers, a journey that spanned both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. In the process, we discovered that each side had a completely different approach to the same medically complex problem. Our quest also gave us an opportunity to become familiar with the research team at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, the USA’s premier rehab facility. The life lessons were many, and invaluable. We learned that a person’s drive toward independence, and capacity to actually walk again, are driven primarily by their willpower, and perseverance, by the commitment of the support group around them, and by their therapists. Sometimes written in a funny style, despite its serious subject, the book provides some very practical insights and firsthand information. It is especially addressed to those, who, having experienced a traumatic change in their circumstances, refuse to believe or accept the odds without putting up a fight.
